Some have been calling last night’s Men’s 400m Freestyle Relay the best relay race EVER.
I would definitely agree that it was intense. And I was cheering my head off at that final lap. But, I came across a video this morning that proved something rather startling.
History, indeed, repeats itself.
Check out this video from the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Some of you might remember this race.
Look familiar?

you are correct in that both relays were very similar and we do tend to get caught up in the moment. However last night’s finish was much closer than 2000 in Sydney. The finish last night was .08 seconds difference where as in Sydney it was .21 seconds. Also Lezak broke the record for faster 100m split in a relay and was a over a half second quicker than the French guy. Plus the top five teams all broke the previous world record. So all that is said to say that is why so many people are calling it the greatest relay ever.
Oh I definitely agree, Ben! Having even the fifth place finisher beat the previous world record was OUTSTANDING!
I was just surprised at how similar the two races were. There was even trash talking from the Americans to the Aussies in the 2000 race. Kinda funny how history repeats itself like that!
oh yeah it is very funny how history does repeat itself. It was definitely great drama.
oh and I was going nuts during that last lap, I don’t I’ve been so excited during an Olympic event.
That event and last year’s superbowl game have been some of the greatest sporting events that I can remember in the recent past.
Thanks for the comments, guys. I agree that the Olympic swimming (specifically Micheal Phelps’ races) have been the most exciting events thus far. (And gymnastics. I love watching that stuff!)
Let’s see if he can make history tonight!
